CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The MiraCosta women's soccer team showed poise beyond its years on Friday night, earning a gritty 3-1 road victory over Southwestern College in front of an intense environment. The win lifts the Spartans to 3-1 in conference play while solidifying their standing as the No. 11 team in Southern California and No. 20 in the state.
Led by a roster dominated by freshmen, MiraCosta wasted no time setting the tone. Just eight minutes into the match, Shelby Maldonado opened the scoring with a composed finish off a feed from Amslee Mikichi. The Spartans doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute when Mikichi found the back of the net, assisted by Hailey Benito, sending MiraCosta into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Southwestern responded after the break, cutting the deficit to 2-1 in the 65th minute. But with the crowd pressing and momentum swinging, the young Spartans steadied themselves. Maldonado silenced the rally with her second goal of the night in the 77th minute, an unassisted strike that sealed the win.
Goalkeeper Monica Martinez stood tall in net, recording 10 saves on 11 shots on goal to anchor the Spartan defense. Despite being outshot 11-10 and facing six corner kicks, MiraCosta's composure and resilience proved decisive.
"This was a huge moment for our group," said head coach [Coach's Name]. "For such a young team to come together in this type of environment and execute says a lot about their character and growth."
The win continues a strong start to the season for the Spartans, who are quickly proving they belong among the region's elite programs. MiraCosta returns to action next week looking to build on the momentum and climb further up the state rankings.
