Spartan Beat Southwestern, Clinch Conference Championship
The MiraCosta women's basketball team has been unstoppable this season and Wednesday night was no different. The Spartans dominated the game from the tip off and after resting their starters much of the second half, won the game by a final score of 98-60. Sophomore guard Kyla Palpallatoc led the team in scoring with 17 points. Pohai Basso was hot from long distance, making five three pointers for 15 points. Hailey Schmidt added 14 points and 13 rebounds. Nicole Fernandez scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
With an overall record of 27-0 and a conference record of 11-0, they head in to the final game of conference with at least a share of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championship. This Spartan team continues to break records. 27 wins is the most by a MiraCosta women's basketball team. Also noteworthy is that the team is ranked #5 in the state coaches poll, which is the highest a MiraCosta women's basketball team has ever been ranked.
The team is averaging 84 points per game on over 20 assists per game. MiraCosta's pressure defense and fast-paced offense has made it difficult on their opponents. The Spartans are averaging nearly 20 steals per game, leading to easy baskets and multiple significant runs throughout a game. Their playoff resume is strong. They have won 15 games against teams that have a record of .500 or better. Of the seven conferences in the south, MiraCosta has victories over three teams winning their conference and four teams that are in second place in their conference.
MiraCosta's last game is Friday, February 20th, and then they will play in the 3C2A Regional State Playoffs. The state playoffs begin on Wednesday, February 25th, but the Spartans' first game will likely be on Saturday, February 28th.
