Spartan Women's Basketball on Top of the PCAC Standings
After a big week and two more wins, the MiraCosta women's basketball team is on top of the PCAC standings. On Wednesday, MiraCosta took on their cross town rivals, Palomar College, and earned a 65-62 win. On Friday, the Spartans hosted Imperial Valley College and won by a final score of 76-29. MiraCosta improves their overall record to 23-0 and their conference record to 8-0.
The latest state rankings had the Spartans at #5 and it would be expected that they move up after the key victory over Palomar College.
The team has been dominant thus far, averaging 86 points per game and is averaging over 10 made three point shots per game. Additionally they are averaging over 20 assists and steals per game. These statistics highlight the attack minded and unselfish culture that Coach Perryman has established in his first year at MiraCosta.
Sophomores Kyla Palpallotoc and Anayla Anderson are leading the team in scoring, both at 11 points per game. The team has five players averaging nine points or more per game. Freshman guard, Czarina Powell, leads the way with 2.7 made three point shots per game. She is shooting 40% from behind the line on the season. Another freshmah, Melia Hinojos, is also a threat from deep, making 1.8 three point shots per game, shooting 34%. A total of five players is averaging at least one made three point shot per game and all but one player on the roster has made a three point shot this season.
Chaya Scott and Kiya Waters are dominating the glass, averaging eight and seven rebounds per game respectively.
In addition to Anayla Anderson's scoring, she is also averaging more than six assists and four steals per game.
