MiraCosta Stays Undefeated, Beats Pasadena at Home

On day two of the Winter Invitational Tournament, MiraCosta cruised to their 14th win of the season, staying a perfect 14-0.  The final score was 65-41 after forty minutes of play.  With the win, MiraCosta becomes the last undefeated team standing in the 3C2A organization (all community colleges in California.)  The mighty Spartans earned a #9 state ranking in the first coaches poll of the season and currently are positioned #8 in the state RPI.

Key wins against ranked teams include a 47-45 win over Irvine Valley, a 59-45 win over Santa Barbara, and most recently a 70-46 win over Glendale. MiraCosta also has scored 100 or more points five times so far this season.

The Spartan team is led by sophomores Kyla Pallpalotoc, Anayla Anderson, Kiya Waters, Charlotte Dagnino and Chaya Scott, all transfers from a Grossmont College team in 2024-45 that went deep in the state tournament. Additionally, MiraCosta also has sophomores Faith Behrendt and Hailey Schmidt, returners from the Spartan program last year. Newcomers Melia Hinojos, Czarina Powell, Nicole Fernandez, Syri Prevo and Pohai Basso all bring different skill sets that make the Spartan team nearly impossible to match up with. While Pallpalotoc and Waters lead the Spartans in scoring, 11 of the 12 players on the roster have scored double digits in a game this season. MiraCosta's defense is often its best offense, pressing the opponent and creating easy baskets.

The 14-0 record is the best ever in program history, and by the looks of things, the Spartans don't seem to be slowing down.  With incredible depth and a noticeable passion and enthusiasm on the court, MiraCosta has big goals that they plan to attack one game at a time.

Tomorrow MiraCosta will take on West LA College before the holiday break. After the New Year the Spartans will host Mt. San Jacinto, another ranked team.  The Pacific Coast Athletic Conference also looks strong with a couple teams high in the state RPI that will challenge MiraCosta for the conference championship.
