Spartans Start Historic 11–0 — Best in Program History
The MiraCosta College women's basketball team is rolling into December unbeaten and unstoppable. At 11–0, the Spartans are off to the best start in program history — a dominant opening stretch built on depth, size, experience, and a relentless team-first approach at both ends of the floor.
MiraCosta has been explosive offensively, topping the 100-point mark multiple times — including 118–38 over Desert, 103–45 at West LA, 106–37 vs. El Camino, and 100–55 at Palo Verde. The Spartans have also shown poise in tight moments, grinding out a key 47–45 win over Irvine Valley, proving they can win high-scoring shootouts and defensive battles alike.
Balanced scoring, size, and versatility up front
The frontcourt has been a major strength. Kiya Waters has been a force inside, finishing with efficiency around the rim. Chaya Scott continues to give the Spartans physicality, rebounding, and interior defense, while Charlotte Dagnino stretches the floor as a forward who can score inside and out. Together, the trio's size and presence have helped MiraCosta take control of the paint night after night.
Guards driving the pace
Sophomore Kyla Palpallatoc leads the team offensively and has been electric attacking downhill and getting to the free-throw line. Anayla Anderson has been a reliable scorer and playmaker as well, providing energy and consistency on the perimeter.
Freshman Melia Hinojos has emerged as a dynamic perimeter threat, joined by shooters Czarina Powell and Pohai Basso, who have knocked down timely threes to open up the floor and stretch opposing defenses.
Freshman guard Syri Prevo and sophomore transfer, Nicole Fernandez also have made their impact across the first eleven games, adding necessary bench production.
Experience matters
In addition to the sophomore transfers that are performing well, the Spartans also benefit from steady leadership from their two active returners, Faith Behrendt and Hailey Schmidt, both key pieces from last year's roster. Their familiarity with the college game has helped anchor a roster packed with rising talent, and their presence provides calm in tight moments.
Statement wins and more to come
MiraCosta's undefeated run includes perfect marks at home, on the road, and at neutral sites, reflecting a team that shows up anywhere. The College of the Canyons Crossover showcased the Spartans' composure and versatility with back-to-back wins over Santa Barbara and LA Mission.
Next up: one big game this week against, Glendale, then the Spartans return home for a tournament Dec 17-19. After the winter break, conference play begins December 7 at Imperial Valley, followed by home games against Cuyamaca (Dec. 9) and Mt. San Jacinto (Dec. 14).
This group has already rewritten history — but they're clearly just getting started.
