The MiraCosta College men's soccer team took their home field on Wednesday as the #13 seed in the 3C2A State Playoffs. After 90 minutes, the Spartans finished with a 2-0 victory and a place in the second round, where they will match up with El Camino College. With the win MiraCosta improves to 12-4-6 overall.
In the first round MiraCosta looked strong, scoring twice and holding the Rustlers scoreless. The defensive line of Dominik Wiks, Alejandro Colina, Thierry McElroy and Kellen Love worked together to slow down Golden West and limit the difficult situations for goalkeeper Omar Garcia Velez. The back liine and Garcia Velez finished with a clean sheet, one of seven on the season.
The first goal was scored in the 69th minute by Wiks and assisted by Steven Renner, off of a corner kick. Six minutes later, Renner created another advantage for the Spartans using his speed to put pressure on the Golden West back line. After racing by the first defender, Renner made a perfect pass to striker Silas Tackaberry for MiraCosta's second goal.
The midfielders (Danny Barbosa, Jiovanni Ramirez, Ricky Toxtle, Maika Beristain and Brandon Jeffers) continued their positive impact on the field with a noticeable intensity in controlling the center of the field. Additionally, the work rate of Cesar Cruz and Lincoln Newcomer continued to put the Rustlers on their heals.
With the win, MiraCosta will travel to El Camino College where they will take on the #4 seeded Warriors on Saturday at 1pm in Torrance, CA. The two teams have recent history. In 2024, MiraCosta upset the Warriors at El Camino to end their playoff dreams. Expect a great 90 minutes of soccer from two fantastic teams.
