MiraCosta's men's soccer team came out on top in a thrilling 2-0 win over rival Palomar College on Friday, October 4, 2024. The game, held at MiraCosta's home field in Oceanside, was a crucial match in the Spartans' quest for the conference championship. With the win, MiraCosta improved to 5-4-1, keeping their postseason aspirations alive and delivering a decisive blow to Palomar.

First-Half Dominance Sets the Tone

The first half of the match saw MiraCosta dictating the tempo and pressing high against Palomar's defense. Despite several missed opportunities, the Spartans broke through in the 45th minute when forward Charaboy Inriestra capitalized on a perfect setup from midfielder Brandon Jeffers. The play began with Jeffers slicing through Palomar's backline, delivering a low cross into the box, where Inriestra calmly slotted the ball past Palomar's goalkeeper, Amanueal Kidanemariam, to put MiraCosta ahead 1-0 just before halftime.

The timing of the goal couldn't have been more significant, as it gave MiraCosta a much-needed psychological edge going into the break. The Spartans' defense, led by center-backs Leo Ayala and Dominik Wicks, stifled Palomar's attack, keeping them without a single shot on goal in the first half.

Second-Half Seals the Win

As the second half progressed, Palomar came out with renewed energy, but they found it difficult to penetrate MiraCosta's organized defense. Every attempt Palomar made was met with strong resistance, including some key interceptions by Wicks and midfielder Ricky Toxtle.

The game's intensity escalated in the final 20 minutes, with Palomar desperately pushing for an equalizer. However, MiraCosta's defense stood firm, and in the 82nd minute, the Spartans added a second goal to their tally. Once again, it was Brandon Jeffers who orchestrated the attack. Jeffers floated a perfectly placed corner kick into the box, finding Wicks, who rose above the defense to head the ball into the back of the net, giving MiraCosta a 2-0 lead and securing all three points.

Casteneda Stands Tall in Goal

On the other end of the field, goalkeeper Bryan Casteneda was in top form. Casteneda, who recorded three saves throughout the match, made a critical stop early in the second half to preserve the Spartans' 1-0 lead. His calm and collected presence between the posts helped MiraCosta stay composed as Palomar ramped up their offensive pressure.

Despite Palomar earning several set-piece opportunities, including multiple corner kicks, Casteneda and the MiraCosta defense were up to the task, keeping a clean sheet in what was one of the team's most complete performances of the season.

Heated Rivalry

The rivalry between MiraCosta and Palomar was on full display, with both teams playing with high intensity and physicality. The referee was kept busy, handing out several yellow cards to both sides as tensions flared. Palomar saw four of their players booked for aggressive fouls, while MiraCosta's Dominik Wicks and Charaboy Inriestra were both shown yellow cards in the closing moments of the match.

 

Head Coach Frank Zimmerman praised his team's resilience and work ethic after the game, noting how important the win was in maintaining their championship hopes. "This was a true team effort," said Zimmerman. "We knew what this game meant, and the guys executed our game plan perfectly. I'm proud of how they fought until the final whistle."

MiraCosta will look to carry this momentum into their next matchup as they continue their push for the conference crown, knowing that every point counts in this tightly contested race.
