MiraCosta Beach Volleyball Opens Season With Perfect 4-0 Start
The MiraCosta women's beach volleyball team started the season out in dominant fashion, finishing a perfect 4-0 and earning wins over two different four year universities. On day one of the Spartan invitational tournament, MiraCosta earned a clean 5-0 sweep over Irvine Valley College. In the second game of the day the Spartans battled Arizona Christian University, escaping with a 3-2 victory.
On day two MiraCosta defeated Orange Coast College 4-1 before winning the championship against Hope International university. The final score in the finals was also 4-1.
In the first match the Spartans were dominant on every line, winning in two games. Gwen Mitchell and Kylie Osborne were especially good in the 5's line, allowing their opponents only 11 points in the entire match, 21-5 and 21-6. Daniela Szajkowski and Chara Wondercheck also looked confident, winning 21-11 and 21-6.
In the second match of the day, it was much more competitive. Hailey Heflin and Kiara Keibel led the way in the 1's line, defeating Arizona Christian's top team 21-17 and 21-13. Emee Fellens, former Spartan, was a member of the ACU top team. Jaiden Zeis (ACU 2's line) is also a former MiraCosta beach volleyball athlete. This match was a fun homecoming and competitive overall match that ended in the Spartans earning a gritty 3-2 win.
On day two MiraCosta was firing on all cylinders, beating Orange Coast College 4-1. Freshman Claire Komadina and Willow Snow made a statement, winning 21-7 and 21-6. In the championship match the Spartans won 4-1 against a talented Hope International University squad. Savai Kilaulani and Sarah Campo Sanchez looked strong in the 2's line, winning 21-15 and 21-11. Heflin/Keibel won an exciting match with a 28-26 score in the second game.
Overall the Spartan team looked strong and appears to be ready for a long season that will continue on Friday February 6th at The Master's University.
